Dapo Akande: Joy as UK nominates Nigerian-born as representative at UN commission

Dapo Akande, a Nigerian-born law professor, has been nominated by the United Kingdom as its candidate for the International Law Commission (ILC) at the United Nations (UN).

The professor of international law is currently a don at the Blavatnik School of Government at the University of Oxford. Akande, who was given the UK’s slot ahead of a UN election billed for November 2021, has his formative legal experience and qualification in Nigeria before moving out of the country.

Justifying Akande's selection in a statement on Monday, March 1, the UK’s secretary of state for foreign, commonwealth and development affairs, Dominic Raab, described the legal luminary as “one of the finest legal scholars in the UK.”

Raab said Akande will be perfectly positioned to slog it out with nine other Western Europe nominees, Premium Times reports.

“The UK has always been a strong supporter of the International Law Commission and is proud of the contribution that British international lawyers have made to its work. I believe that Professor Akande is perfectly positioned to strengthen this contribution yet further."
