World Civil Defence Day: Sanusi Hussaini, Abdulkadir Alao Sulu, other Osun Officers harp on civil protection, adequate funding to aid national economics



The Federal Government of Nigeria has been implored to make available equipment that will aid smooth operations of the men of Nigeria Civil Defence and Security Corps, most especially as the country is facing several crisis that tend to disrupt its economy.



 

The was the major discussion on Monday, March 1st, as the Osun State Command of the Corps held the 2021 World Civil Defence Day.


Speaking on this year 2021’s theme, “Strong civil protection to preserve the national economy”, the Lecturer, DCC Sanusi Hussaini highlighted different roles operatives of the corps can perform in the management of national assets.


Hussaini added that the recent clashes, natural disasters, insurgency, banditry and other insecurity challenges facing the country have shown that there’s a need for improved funding for the agency in order to deliver effectively.


He said, “In the last few decade rather than meaning for disaster to strike, avd protection shifted toward a more proactive and integrated approach tocusiog on better preparedness and early warning to minimise sadet risks and enhance the efficiency and speed of response.



 “Civil protection is a multidimensional system based on broad range of cultural, geographical and economic enableter pad barriets Civil protection activities during the phase of emergency preparedness.


“It’s unfortunate that the federal government has given the roles of civil protection and emergency response to coordinating agencies such as National Emergency Management Agency and others. This has to be reversed.”

 


In his address, the Commandant of NSCDC Osun State Command, Abdulkadir Alao Sulu called on the people not to resort to self in cases of misunderstanding, emphasizing how peace can only bring about development.



 

“Only peace can bring about development. I call on the people of the State and the country at large to always involve security agencies in case of any misunderstanding to prevent breakdown of law and order. People must not resort to self help. All issues can easily be brought to table and resolved.”


 

“On our part as security agents, we are aware of this period of the year, when there’s always some misunderstanding between farmers and the herders and we’re organizing stakeholders’ meeting to sensitize people on what they should do to avoid conflict. This we believe, will go a long way in helping to prevent crisis in communities.”

Commandant Sulu also called on the federal government to improve funding for the agency, stating that men of the corps are ready to deliver improved service if given better equipment.
