Crisis Persists In Ibadan Despite Closure Of Shasha Market

Despite the closure of Shasha Market by the Oyo state government, the clash between Hausa and Yoruba residents have continued.

It was gathered that despite the presence of the security operatives in the area, the youths are still engaging in a free for all.

Some persons alleged that the officers, who were deployed to maintain law and order are protecting those from a particular ethnic group.

A source said many people have been killed while a lot of houses have been set on fire.

Trouble started after a Yoruba man and a Hausa resident got engaged in a heated argument on Thursday.

The crisis escalated and eventually led to the death of one of them.

The situation continued until the government shut down the market and imposed a curfew.

But on Sunday, a resident of Shasha, told Daily Trust that the crisis still continued on Saturday evening.

“Those people are still engaging each other despite the curfew. Please don’t stay long before you go home. I am also leaving here now. Our people are alleging that the soldiers are supporting their opponents.

“Government needs to act now before it degenerates to other parts of the state. Aside from the imposition of curfew, governors may need to ask their leaders to talk to their subject. I am afraid,” he said.
