NANS rejects increase in electricity tariff, describes govt action as insensitive, ill-timed and unacceptable

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has rejected the recently announced increment in electricity tariffs, describing it as insensitive, ill-timed and unacceptable.

This was part of the resolutions made after the association's extensive deliberation and  review of the recent hike in electricity tariff and contained in a statement issued on Thursday by the students body and signed by the President, Comrade Sunday Asefon.

Asefon stated that the hike at this time is condemnable and inhumane considering the economic havoc the COVID-19 pandemic has caused on Nigerians.

He advised the Nigerian government to toll the line of other nations of the world by prioritising the welfare of its people and putting in place necessary measures to ease the economic challenges occasioned by the pandemic.

He however expressed the readiness of the Apex Students body to continue to fight against hike in electricity tarrif until prepaid metres are provided for every household at no extra cost to the consumers, just as he warned the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to reverse the hike or face mass action.

The statesment reads in part; "these resolutions will be pursued by all structures of NANS until the reversal of the hike in the price is implemented by the appropriate agency of government. In accomplishing the aforementioned resolutions, NANS will not hesitate to collaborate with other civil society organizations to ensure the hike is reversed.

"We trust the government to do the right thing by ordering the reversal of this anti-people policy but rather do more in alleviating the suffering of Nigerians as a result of the global pandemic Covid19.

"We, therefore, call on our members across the country to be ready to occupy if the policy is not reversed shortly."
