Latest COVID-19: NCDC records highest number of cases in 5 months as Abuja tops list

As the battle against Coronavirus continues, Nigeria has recorded over 670 new cases of the deadly virus in 15 states and the federal capital territory, Abuja.

This was disclosed by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) via its official Twitter page in its daily count for Thursday, December 10.

The minister of health while briefing the presidential task force (PTF) on COVID-19 affirmed that the country may just be on the verge of a second wave of COVID-19 infections

with the spike in the numbers over the past days.

”We are seeing the increase in the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the last few days, which we have frequently alluded to in recent times. This rightly suggests that we may just be on the verge of a second wave of this pandemic,” Ehanire had said.

Meanwhile, the fatality toll has risen to 1,190, with six new deaths recorded on Thursday.

The Thursday figure is the highest daily count of deaths in the past three months — the last time Nigeria recorded six fatalities in one day was on September 8.

NCDC also confirmed 232 new recoveries on Thursday, increasing the total number of discharged patients to 65,474.

A total of 71,344 cases have now been confirmed across the country.

Meanwhile, the federal government had raised the fears that Nigeria could be entering a second wave in the spread of the COVID-19 virus following the rise in the number of cases.

Osagie Ehanire, minister of health, said he had directed isolation and treatment centres in the country to prepare for reopening over the new development.

The minister speaking at a COVID-19 briefing on Thursday, December 10, disclosed that Nigeria may be on the verge of a second wave judging by the increase in the number of confirmed cases in the last few days.
