Fayemi Receives NANS President Asefon, Reveals Next Move On ASUU Strike, Education Funding, Others

The Special Adviser on Federal Matter to the Governor, Hon. Makinde Araoye, handed over the newly elected President of National Association of Nigerian Students(NANS), Comrade Sunday Asefon to the Chairman, Nigerian Governors’ Forum(NGF), Dr Kayode Fayemi, VAM News reports.


During the courtesy visit to the Executive Governor of Ekiti State and Dr Kayode Fayemi in his office today, Tuesday, 15th December, to appreciate him for his pro-youth activities and discuss state of education as well as that of the nation, Makinde described NANS President as an enthusiastic and energetic personality. 


He appreciated Ekiti State Governor, Dr John Kayode Fayemi.


NANS President, Com. Sunday Asefon while delivering his speech, appreciated the students through the support of Governor Kayode Fayemi.


"I appreciate Mr Governor for being youth and students-friendly. Also for the good governance that cut across all the sectors and your patriotic spirit at national level."


He also appreciated all the Comrades from North and from other  regions 


He gave an assurance to maintain peace in all the tertiary institutions.


He promised that his administration will not disappoint the Governor


       Education sector

He urged Mr Governor to make use of his office been the Chairman of the Nigeria Governor's forum to intercede between federal government and put an end to the long time ASUU strike. 


"Asefon demanded for the unconditional end of the ongoing ASUU strike before the end of this year, or we shut down private institutions across the nation" 


He described  that the 5.6% budget allocated to the education sector in 2021 budget as an heartbreaking budget.


NANS President further demanded for UNESCO 26% budgetary allocation to education from federal government and all governments of 36 states of the federation to aid proper funding of education.


He revealed that NANS is ready to partner with the Federal Government, NGF on insecurities issues emanating from the campuses, to ensure the safety of the Nigerian students and to take care of “out of school” primary school pupils and “dropouts” of higher institutions.


Governor John Kayode Fayemi Fayemi appreciated everybody in attendance. He congratulated the NANS President and saluted the courage of other NANS Presidential Candidates present at the venue, Comrade Ladoja, Pilot, Sir Newton, Momodu, Momentum and other contestants.


He advised Com. Asefon Sunday to be sensitive with the leadership and his activities should be centralised all across the country, stressing that Com. Sunday Asefon is not representing Ekiti State, but Nigerian students.


In his remarks, Governor Fayemi said, “NGF has already been intervening in ASUU-FG lock jam and they will double their efforts”.


He assured that ASUU strike will be over and students will resume back to school  before the end of the year.

 

He said, it is a duty to mentor the younger one to be in their shoes, so as ensure a balanced and a peaceful society.


“I see it as a duty not a favour to mentor young minds. And I want implore you to employ the first two C’s, consultation and consolidation before the third C, confrontations while addressing any issues”, Fayemi advised.


He further stated that NANS has advantage in term of massive population and they can use that to achieve a lot.


Fayemi said Asefon as President of NANS has vantage opportunity to do more and make NANS very viable. He reminisced his nostalgia as student, youth and pro-democracy advocate.


Fayemi gave assurance to support Comrade Asefon Sunday led NANS  administration to achieve a good and egalitarian administration that can move the organization forward. He advised NANS to create directorate of “Research and Policy”. He advised President-elect to advance the lot of Nigerian Students.


Fayemi encouraged Asefon to remain pro-students and speak truth to power when necessary. He advised him to use massive number of Nigerian students for overall interest of student community.


He talked of opportunities that can make youth use their creative ability and achieve maximum benefits which technology is one of it rather than “blank job opportunities “.


He spoke on the security challenges in the nation and frown at kidnap of primary school pupils in Katsina. He spoke for Gov. Masari of Katsina state as proactive helmsman and assured to gathering that NGF and FG will intensity efforts to nib the issues in bud.


Fayemi said that Asefon must put it behind his mind that NANS is not an indigenous organization and he must always consider federal character principles of equal opportunities while leading so he will not run into trouble and loose massive supports of the people across the country.


Earlier, former Senate President of NANS and spokesman of G-7, an ideological movement in NANS Southwest, Comrade Agbabiaka Hammed has lauded Gov. Fayemi for his usual supports and for being encourager of young minds.


Former NANS President, Comrade Femi Struggles and former NANS Leader, Mohammed Bapare also commended Fayemi’s giant strides, encouraged him to do more and assured him of future’s youth supports in case it is needed by him in the nearest future.


Other dignitaries present are: Commissioner For Youth and Sport, Hon. Micheal Awopetu, State Secretary to the Government, Mr Oyebanji Omoleye and others.
