Big surprise as ex-Premier League star declared bankrupt at the age of 33

Royston Drenthe has been declared bankrupt by a court in the Netherlands.

The former Real Madrid wonderkid was not present during the hearing as the court in Breda made the ruling.

However, the ex-Everton explained that his lawyer was on holiday and expects the decision to be reversed.

The 33-year-old told Dutch site voetbalzone quoted by Daily Mail:

"I don't know the ins and outs and I don't know exactly what's going on, but if this is what I think it is, it's not that important.

"I'm always under a magnifying glass, but it will be resolved as it should."

Drenthe who began his career with Eredivisie side Feyenoord before moving to the Santiago Bernabeu had lost £3.2million after his glittering career in football.

He won La Liga in 2007 in his first season at the Spanish capital but failed to nail down a starting shirt before going on loan to Premier League side Everton.

Drenthe also played for Reading between 2013 and 2015 as well as a loan stint with Sheffield Wednesday.

He pursued a career in music and acting after quitting football in 2016 but returned to Sparta Rotterdam in 2018.

Drenthe is currently playing for Kozakken Boys in the Dutch third tier as he tries to make earns meet.
