Former NUJ DP Emerges Traditional Ruler In Ondo

Prince Rotimi Obamuagun, Former NUJ DP In Ondo

_As State Abrogates Grade D Categorisation Of Obas

The Ondo state government on Monday approved the selection of former national Deputy President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Prince Rotimi Obamuagun, as the traditional ruler of Imoru in Ose Local Government Area of the state, VAM has learnt.

The state Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Mrs. Lola Fagbemi, disclosed this at a press briefing in Akure, the state capital, after the State Executive Council (SEC) meeting.

Fagbemi said the emergence of Prince Obamuagun as the new Olumoru-Elect followed the government's standing policy not to interfere in the selection of traditional rulers in the state.

She said the new Olumoru-elect secured the highest number of votes of the kingmakers during the selection process.

Also, the state government demonstrated its avowed respect for the traditional institution by abrogating the Grade "D" categorization of Obas in the state.

The state Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Kola Olawoye, explained that the state executive council abrogated the Grade "D" classification because the category had become obsolete across the Yorubaland.

He, therefore, said all the 67 Obas who were hitherto on Grade D before the classification was abrogated would now move to Grade C.

The Commissioner added that the state government would initiate a legal framework to back the decision.

According to him, the decision will enhance the status of the Obas.

Olawoye said: "We are sure that the decision to abrogate the Grade D classification will enhance the status of our traditional rulers. Their welfare is our concern."
