Fake military officer apprehended in Ondo

By Tunde Olorungbotemi

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has apprehended a man, Olusegun Abe, for impersonating a Flight Lieutenant, SA Abe.

The 34-year-old suspect almost defrauded a family member of a late NAF pilot, Flight Lieutenant Ohai Idonije, who was recently killed by Bokoharam insurgents.

The impostor, who fully dressed in a Nigerian military woodland camouflage uniform, had earlier approached a sister to the deceased, Mrs Tola Gbadamosi, under the guise of being her late brother’s senior colleague at the NAF, and promised to assist the family in claiming the benefits of the deceased.

Mrs Gbadamosi who is a crime reporter with The Hope said, ‘Sometimes late last month, the suspect came to my office to drop his contact number and left instruction that I should call him, claiming to be my late brother’s colleague”.

The suspect after being nabbed, said, ”I don’t know what came over me. And my pastor had told me he saw handcuffs in my hands, but I did not listen”, he lamented.

While handling over the suspect to Ondo state police command, the Acting Commander of NAF 209 Quick Response Group, Ipetu Ijesha, Osun State, Flight Leautenant Owoche Morphy said;

“the suspect, Olusegun Abe, wrongly wearing the rank of a Wing Commander in the place of Flight Commander was on the verge of defrauding the sister of late Flight Lieutenant Ohai Idonije, by asking her to hand over originals of some sensitive documents of her late NAF pilot brother, which the suspect intends to use in claiming the benefits of the late NAF officer.”

“The NAF wishes to inform the general public that the service is a professional and disciplined organization that is focused on the discharge of its constitutional responsibilities”.

He said, “accordingly, NAF will not condone any act of tarnishing it’s image. We therefore, implore the general public and the families of the deceased personnel to continually direct all enquires on payment of death benefits to the Nigerian Military Pension Board Headquarters in Abuja and should desists from engaging intermediaries”.

In his response, the Police Public Relations Officer in Ondo State, ASP Tee Leo Ikoro appreciated men of the NAF for the quick response, calling for more synergy.
