[Opinion] Relaxed Lockdown: A Time To Be Extra-Cautious - Abayomi Abdulraheem

By One Class

Majority of Nigerians were elated to hear Mr. President relaxing the lockdown in the two Nigerian States and Federal Territories, Ogun, Lagos and Abuja, he previously put into total lockdown, while he approved State Governors' request of restrictions imposition on inter-states borders movement/traveling.

His address toed the line of thoughts and expectations of lots of Nigerians, as we had people jubilating and highly expectant of meeting friends and colleagues, starting from Monday - May 4, 2020, when the lockdown ease begins. Some are even making a case for schools' resumption.

Does that mean COVID19 has come to an end in Nigeria???

Anyone who read my last article titled "COVID19: OPTIONS FOR NIGERIA" (https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=3279808478717357&id=100000647114998) would understand that Nigerian government opted for my third option, in order not to be confronted with a state of anarchy. This ease is a deliberate attempt of letting people decide, by themselves, to either live or die, be infected or stay healthy, since same people are the ones asking to be let go, while government is also scared of the economic effects of the continuous lockdown.

This is a similitude of 'a proverbial chick that never appreciates its protector until it finds itself in the claws of an eagle.

The confirmed cases of COVID19 in Nigeria is close to 2,000 at the moment, but we must expect a spike by next week. We should be expecting the Nigeria COVID19 confirmed cases to be around 5,000 or more by May 8, 2020, while COVID19 related deaths are expected to spike. What should be our individual concern is how to make sure the spike is never  seriously grave and we are not included in the statistics.

Dear Nigerians, if you have no important thing to do outside your home, kindly remain indoor. It isn't wise of us if we are to be the index case of COVID19 in our community/street. If we must go out, kindly let us maintain all necessary precautions as prescribed by NCDC.

Let's wear our facemasks if we must go out; let's wash our hands, thoroughly, before entering our house, the moment we return home; let's maintain social distancing; accept no visitors into your house at this moment, no matter how close relative they could be; wash your hands the moment you have a contact with currency notes, as they have been identified as a source of spreading the virus.

Permit my encouraging us all to go into farming at this season. Whether backyard farming or on a farmland, kindly let's engage in farming at this period of lockdown ease. Let's plant pepper and vegetables in our compound.

I encourage us all to stock foods and essentials in our storage as this lockdown ease is surely not likely going to last more than two weeks until we go back to a second face of total lockdown in all states.

Nigeria is yet to reach the peak of COVID19 curve, let alone of expecting the downward trend. The lockdown ease is a call for a spike - mark my words.

To our dear States Governments, it is time you dare not left the security of your respective state's borders to the hands of the Nigerian Security Agencies, especially Nigerian Police. This is the time each State's Government must assign strict shift-based supervisory jobs to their multitude of Senior Special Advisers (SSA), Special Advisers (SA), Special Assistants, Personal Assistants (PA), and their respective advisers, in order to join the security agencies at the state's borders. Let the job be a shift of 8 hours duration to each of the three personnel assigned to co-man the state's borders with the security personnel on duty. With this, it would be hard for the security agencies to collect token in easing interstate borders movement. Dwellers of settlements around state borders must also not keep quite.

Always blow the whistle whenever you see strange faces in your community.

We must note that this is the best time for a state to diversify its economy and sources of revenue, if it is been led by a brilliantly committed governor. Agriculture stands out as an answer at this farming season. Let us go into farming now, as a state, in order to serve as food hub for other states when the projected famine finally knocks, and as well regain our financial strength through agriculture. I also hope our respective state governments would extend supports, financial, to poultry, fish, and husbandry farmers. As expected, this is the time for us to know who amongst our leaders are competent, people/service-driven, intelligent, and capable to be referred to as an ethical leaders.

This is the time to distinguish between pocket-targeted leadership and service-inclined leadership.

We must all remember that this lockdown ease isn't a mark of the end of COVID19 but a tool to spike the figures. Make sure you're not a part of the casualties or patients figures. Let us all #staysafe and ensure to #StayAtHome and #TakeResponsibility.

Above is my own token of palliatives to my beloved friends and followers.
