Chinese Medical Experts In Nigeria: What You Need To Know - Health Researcher, Idowu ADEWUMI speaks

Bybl Tunde Olorungbotemi Did you know that Chinese Medical Experts has arrived Nigeria, Learn the basics of points below and discover how they affect us or not by Health Researcher, Idowu ADEWUMI:

1. I have read different people's views on the issue of Chinese Medical Experts imported into Nigeria, allegedly to join our Nigerian Doctors and other forntline health workers in the fight against the pandemic of COVID-19 ravaging the world, Nigeria inclusive.

2. While it will be safe to join other well-meaning Nigerians in the demand for the federal government's action in addressing matters of priority, like ensuring adequate provision of needed health equipment, enabling environments for Nigerian health workers to put their skills in to effective use, attractive welfare packages and life insurance for health workers, and training & retraining of medical/health workforce as well as upgrading our health institutions to meet international standard and independably provide adequate health care services as desired by her citizens; it is also important to take note of some points that matter.

3. Before dissecting the points that matter, it is also not going to be out of place to join Nigerians in raising alarm over what is perceived to be 'conspiracy against the whole world by China.' - We are not quite unaware of the skyrocket increase in morbidity and fatality rates in Italy's COVID-19 cases as 'coincidentally' occassioned by the Chinese' medical experts' arrival in the country. (although no fact to prove that Chinese Doctors' arrival is the main cause of increase in the nation's COVID-19 case rate).

4. The foregoing would ordinarily make well-meaning Nigerians to exhibit fear and anxiety over the invitation of these Chinese medical expert in to the country. Another area to look in to is the skepticism as per what is likely to be the health status of these Chinese Nationales, it is however important to note that statement from the Presidency through the Personal Assistant on New Media to President Buhari has confirmed that the medical team would observe 14 days quarantine before they begin their operation in Nigeria.

5. Having joined other Nigerians in sharing and reflecting their opinions, it becomes necessary to lend my own personal view as the matter appears to me.

6. It is considered necessary to quote the words of the Minister for Health, Dr. Osagie Ehanire who during one of the daily press briefing of the Presidential task force on the fight against COVID-19 announced that the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) (which is operative in Nigeria) has donated some medical supplies to Nigeria as part of their social responsibility service and that also contained in the approval letter for the donation is the offer to import alongside the supplies, medical and technical expert who would install some of the supplies, test-use them before handing them over to the government and thereafter offer their experience in China's fight against COVID-19.

7. From the paragraph 6 above, it was made clear that it was not intentional of the Nigerian's government to import Chinese medical expert but a kind gesture by the CCECC in their own way of joining hands with Nigerian Government to combat the disease. It is however important to further note that these foreign experts cannot treat Nigerian patients if not licensed by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) and as such they can only provide a window of opportunity to strengthen our response mechanisms through discussions and exchange of ideas as well as giving our medical/health workforce the opportunity of sharing global best practices.

8. One thing that must thus be done after the 14 days quarantine of the foreign experts is to subject them to COVID-19 test in order to be sure of their status. - This is important so as not to expose people they will be relating with during the course of carrying out their assignments in to danger, should there be any of them carrying the virus without showing symptoms and by extension, not to worsen our Nation's case rate.

9. Conclusively, Nigerians should importantly monitor the activities of the Chinese Medical Experts if they will encroach upon reasonable boundaries as espoused by the laws and regulations guiding medical practice in Nigeria and hold the federal government responsible for any eventuality afterwards. As Nigerians, we have our parts to play in curbing community transfer of the disease - Let's maintain good personal hygiene and observe fervent precautionary measures, stay at home unless it is important to go out and pray for Nigeria as we battle against the virus.
