Court remands man after inability to meets 100k bail condition for killing bat on OAU campus
Mr Femi Afolabi, 40 year old has been remanded by a Magistrates' Court in Ile-Ife, Osun on Tuesday, in Nigeria Correctional Centre, over alleged killing bat at Obafemi Awolowo University(OAU), Ile-Ife.
Report gathered that the Prosecutor, Sgt Adewale Adesina, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on Jan 13, 2020 around 09:00 am at OAU premises , Ile-Ife.
Adesina said that the defendant conducted himself in a manner likely to cause the breach of public peace by entered OAU without the institution's Authority and started killing bat with catapult.
He added that the offence contravened section 249(d) of the Criminal Code , Laws of Osun, 2002.
The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to one-count charge of breach of public peace.
The Defence Counsel, Mr Samuel Obi, pleaded for the bail of the defendant in most Liberal term, promised that his client would not jump bail, but would provide substantial sureties.
Magistrate Muhibah Olatunji granted the bail of the defendant in the sum of N100,000 with one surety in like amount.
Olatunji added that the surety must swear to affidavit of means, resides within the court jurisdiction as well as presents three years tax clearance certificate.
She stated further that the house of the surety must be verified by the Prosecutor and three recent passport photograph must be produced by surety and defendant.
But, unfortunately for Afolabi, none of his family shown up to perfect his bail, so he was eventually remanded in Correctional Centre pending the perfection of his bail.
The case was adjourned until Feb 11, for hearing.
