THE National association of university students' office of the National Vice President (South west), Comrade Aruson expressed her displeasure against the inhumane attitudes and extra judicial activities of the officers of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (EKITI STATE COMMAND) towards Nigerian students, VAM News reports.

It is most embarrassing to read that the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) EKITI STATE Command has taken a vertical shift from what the basis of its establishment which is to control and manage the menace of the growing and consumption of illegal drugs amongst Nigerians to molesting and harassing innocent Nigerian students by making illegal arrest and detention and also turning itself to a law court where students are expected to pay humongous amount of money before their release could be effected. .

We have witnessed how governmental agencies created by an act of the parliament which means that they are creation of the law have turned to law themselves and continually terrorise Nigerians without recourse to the rule of law. It is disheartening that this trend is being maintained despite the level of agitations from different quarters in the country for these agencies to truly reflect what they are created for.

In recent times, without being economical with the truth, officers of NDLEA in the country have been projecting the image of the agency as that which is created basically to oppress students and innocent persons all in the name of extorting money from them in the guise of discharging their constitutional duties as enshrined in the law.

It is embarrassing that the fundamental rights of Nigerian students are being flagrantly trampled upon by officers of the agency in Ekiti State Command and this, if not urgently attended to would spark violence between Nigerian students and NDLEA in the state.

The persecution of Nigerian students must not go on for a long time as urgent steps must be taken by the rank and file of NDLEA to address these issues which are but not limited to;

•Burgling into students' apartment all in the name of being in search of drug dealers.

•Intentionally implicating students by dropping weed and any other illegal drug into Students' apartment after forcefully gaining entrance all in the name of extorting them.

•Illegal arrest and detention of Nigerian students without charging them to court but to later make a U-turn to demand money from them.

•Sexual molestation of female students.

•Damages of Students Properties and Extortion of Students under the pretense of being guilty of Drug Abuse

•We demand that an urgent end be put to all these amongst others and that their activities must not exceed the provisions of the law.

Speaking with VAM News, the national Students’ Union Body shall embark on a fact findings process starting from 03/12/2019.
