EDITORIAL: on Ekiti Varsity revalidation brouhaha

Some weeks before now, when the revalidation exercise came on board, there were tolls of WhatsApp messages and articles sent by students expressing their grievances towards the revalidation exercise, VAM News report.

Some people called the Students' Union President unprintable names, and also tagged the school management likewise. Some also threatened to stage protest and all. 

Some EKSUites no longer see the SUG as the students leader or advocate. 

But in point of fact and to set the record straight, the President was not given response by the management, and it is quite understandable that it made you all feel the President isn't working. 

Meanwhile, just yesterday the Students' Union President Comr. Gbadero Oluwaseyi Habeeb staged a protest which made you all think it's rather too late, and that he did it at the eleventh hour when about seventy percent of students have succumbed to the management decision. 

In an interview with the Student Union Vice President II, Comr.Badmus Adebayo asking him why the protest came this late and also why students thinks the Students' Union Government have not been working or doing anything for EKSUites, thereby making them feel the Students' Union Government is figure head.

Ghentle: This is it; students don't understand what we are doing except they serve in our capability. 

We are agitating for EKSUites. We have strong belief in the 3C of aluta which is Consultation, Consultation and Confrontation. We have consulted, consulted and consulted. Series of letters have also been written to the school management about the issues students are facing. Not  only on revalidation, but on all aspects e.g unwanted fees that is been added to the school fee breakdown, in which students aren't enjoying the service, fees like ICT e.t.c. On the  issue of health center; there are limited bed space for students and many more, there are a lot of it, but students don't want to understand. 

The SUG officials are really fighting for Students, but students want us  to take action by always protesting. We need to be very careful in the area of this protest. 

We can't stage protest anyhow, and put our students in danger. The lives and security of students is very paramount to us. What if we protest and some unscrupulous Hoodlums take over what do we do. 

It will definitely lead to something else that will put the lives of our dear Eksuites into danger. 

Question: Sir, other stakeholders are not aware of this protest, and the SUG just made the decision out of the blues. How true is that?

Ghentle: Yes, we didn't inform EKSUites and other stakeholders until the initial day of the protest, and that's because we don't want the school management to be aware at all. If we should send a broadcast before the initial day, the school management will be aware and they will be fully prepared for us they might start calling for consultations in which will surely leads us to not staging the protest. 

The protest was not only for the revalidation, but also for other things like ICT, Part-time students 200 and 300level tuition fees, insecurity of students lives and properties, and many more. Even the President have not been in a good health condition for some days now, but he was still there to stage the protest. We know the agitations of EKSUites, and we are all working hard to make sure the school management grants our requests. Also, the Students' Union Government (SUG) is planning to hold the SUG Week. 

It promises to be entertaining, educative and fun. It is organized for we students as part of the money we all paid for. So it will stand us in good stead if all of us come out in masse to enjoy and thrill yourself at the SUG Week.

 Clarification on the issue of Smart School: There is a contract between the school Management and  Smart School,It cannot be breeched for now until their tenure is over. 

The money we are paying is part of the agreement made earlier by our Senior Colleagues before now, and nobody can do anything about it for now except the contract is over. 

For instance, when you rent a house and you pay for 12 months, the landlord can't send you packing at the 3rd month except if he is ready to refund the remaining 9 months. 

So this also relates to the issue of Smart School , except the school is ready to pay for the remaining money or the years remaining, that's when they can be sent packing. And that will be a burden on the school. 

Where will they get the huge money? It will only bounce back at us, if they are to refund the money. What we can do now is to plead with the smart school management to improve on their services as many faculties are not enjoying it.

Based on the current rumors being speculated on the reduction of data allocation from smart school from 10GB to 5GB we met with the smart school management for clarification and discovered that the rumor is baseless.

We also discovered that based on the super fast nature of the smart bolt which is based on a 5G network data runs faster on it than the conventional 3G network mode hence students are lead to believe that the allocation isn’t complete as claimed.
