Xenophobia: I was afraid of attack, says Akpeyi

The Super Eagles goalkeeper, Daniel Akpeyi, says he was scared to feature in matches during xenophobic attacks that rocked South Africa recently.

The Kaizer Chiefs shot-stopper said he feared that he may be attacked by fans if he made any mistake in the goal post, adding that he was under pressure to perform.

The 33-year-old Nigeria international said this while responding to questions on xenophobia from South African journalists.

He said, “To be honest, at one point, I was a bit worried because I understand I’m not one of the most loved by the fans. I’m sorry to say that.

“So, it always gets to me when I have to play and I say, ‘Daniel, you have to do well’ because I might be someone that they turn around against.

“Even when it’s supposed to be a normal football game, at the end of the day, because of our crazy mentality, things might just turn around.”

While describing the period of xenophobic attacks in South Africa as a scary one for him, he said some fans agitated that he should be dropped from the starting line-up.

“So, somehow, I was beaten between two options, but it is what it is at the end of the day. I have to just make up my mind and put my foot down,” Akpeyi added.
