Arsenal have been charged by the Football Association after a supporter ran onto the pitch and shoved Manchester United defender Chris Smalling in Sunday’s match at the Emirates confirmed by VoiceAirMedia.
The FA have alleged that Arsenal failed to ensure their fans conducted themselves in an orderly fashion during the match, which ended in a 2-0 victory for Unai Emery’s side.
The supporter, Gary Cooper, was this week charged with common assault and encroaching onto the pitch. The 30-year-old, from Surrey, was bailed to appear at Highbury Corner Magistrates’ Court later this month.
Cooper told the Daily Mail that he had been “foolish beyond words”, adding: “I am just so ashamed and have let myself and my family down. What happened was out of character. I am still in shock and feel awful.”
The incident took place on the same day as a Birmingham City fan punched Aston Villa midfielder Jack Grealish at St Andrew’s. Birmingham have also been charged by the FA for failing to control their supporters.
Arsenal have until March 22 to respond to their FA charge.
FA spokesperson said: “It is alleged the club failed to ensure that its spectator[s] conducted themselves in an orderly fashion and refrained from encroaching onto the pitch during the Premier League fixture against Manchester United on Sunday."
