RECTOR: LASPOTECH PRODUCED 120,000 EMINENT PERSONALITIES IN 40 YEARS
Sogunro, Rector, Lagos State Polytechnic (LASPOTECH), has affirmed that the institution, in its 40 years of existence, produced over 120,000 eminent personalities who are outstandingly performing in all walks of life.
Sogunro stated this while addressing newsmen at the Ikorodu campus of the institution on Monday on the activities lined up to celebrate the 40 years anniversary of the polytechnic.
He said that the institution, which began lectures in 1978 with 289 pioneer students, has grown tremendously over the years with students spread among seven schools on full-time and part-time and presently, the polytechnic runs 67 programmes at the National Diploma and Higher National Diploma levels.
The rector also said the Lagos State government has significantly given adequate support towards the development of the polytechnics at various levels.
He said that Governor Bola Tinubu in 1999 increased the polytechnic subvention to N41 million and Babatunde Fashola in May 2011 increased the polytechnic’s subvention to N153 million while Akinwunmi Ambode in June 2016, increased it to 210 million to cater for the needs of the institution.
He further stated that the state government has promised to construct a befitting administration block for the institution, a high capacity auditorium, completion of the abandoned sports complex and funding of the polytechnics drone project for security surveillance in the state.
“As a matter of fact, the state government has engaged consultants and released funds for the drone project which is currently ongoing.”
Speaking further, Sogunro said that the current administration in the state significantly gave adequate funding to the polytechnic towards the success of the 2018 accreditation of 66 programmes in the institution.
He said that the polytechnic is developing human capital for the realization of transforming the polytechnic into a polytechnics university status.
However, speaking of the activities of the 40 years anniversary, he said that the anniversary public lecture/exhibition will hold on Tuesday, November 20, with the topic: “Repositioning Education for Technological Development and Food Safety,” to be delivered by Tony Elumelu, Chairman Heirs Holdings, United Bank for Africa (UBA), Transcorp and Founder, Tony Elumelu Foundation.
He said that the grand finale will hold on Thursday, November 22, at the convocation ground, Ikorodu campus and it will be a day to celebrate long serving state of the polytechnic.
