2019: Why Ondo State Senator, Yele Omogunwa Can't Be Trusted For Second Term

Senator Yele Omogunwa is the Senator representing the Southern Senatorial district of Ondo State at the Red Chamber of the National Assembly.

He was fortunate and lucky to have become the senatorial candidate of People's Democratic Party (PDP) in 2015 general election without passing through the rigorous democratic process of any primaries.

He was handpicked by the former governor, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko who was then the leader of PDP in the State.

Omogunwa floored the All Progressives Congress (APC) Candidate, Barr Morayo Lebi at the 2015 general election to emerge the Senator representing Ondo South till date.

Senator Omogunwa is presently running as the APC senatorial candidate for Ondo South to seek re-election back to the Senate ahead of 2019 general elections.

Omogunwa can no longer be trusted again with the destinies of Ondo South people because of the following reasons:

He is not Accessible

After he won the general election of 2015 and assumed office as a senator, his phones could no longer be reached by people from his senatorial district, ranging from his loyalists, members and leaders of his political party, members of his constituency, friends and family.

He developed the habit of not picking phone calls and refused to come home regularly like before.

He intentionally disengaged himself from being in touch with the grassroots who elected him in 2015.

No Constituency Office

He deliberately refused to have a constituency office in any Local Government of Ondo south with the prime aim of distancing himself from the people who elected him. He never embark on any constituency meeting with the people, neither did he bother to hold any senatorial meeting with those who elected him.
Even till date, Senator Omogunwa does not have a constituency office anywhere in Ondo South as a Senator. And he is receiving his senatorial allowance regularly from the National Assembly without any hitches.

He betrayed his party without Any Cogent Reason

He defected from the PDP to the APC in November 20, 2016 without any meaningful reason for joining the APC. In his letter of defection published by Vanguard on December 1, 2016, Omogunwa said: he defected to enable him actively work for the emergence of Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu as next governor of Ondo State. That was the major reason he gave for leaving a party whose platform he rode upon to become a senator.

Woeful Performance At The Senate

In his three and half years as a senator, Omogunwa did not perform.
He did not bring any dividend of democracy back to his people. He has no visible or traceable constituency projects anywhere till date in any part of Ondo South unlike his other colleagues at the House of Representatives under the same senatorial district. He bought a motor grader in his name to have something to fall back upon as means of survival when he completes his term as senator and he tagged the motor grader as a constituency project to deceive the gullible indigenes.
The question of who owns the grader if he leaves office remain in the offing till today.

He Has No Single Bill As A Senator

Daily Trust of November 24, 2018 reported that Yele Omogunwa topped the list of Senators at the National Assembly without a single bill to their names after spending two years at the senate as a senator.

No Single Motion in 3 years

The only motion moved by Omogunwa at the Senate was when he moved a motion for the legalisation of corruption in Nigeria.
The high level of embarrassment this act of ineptitude brought unto us in Ondo South cannot be forgotten in the history democracy in Nigeria. Please read the press report by the Sun Newspaper on January 25, 2017.

No Record of Any Fruitful or Productive Advocacy

Part of the legislative duty of a senator is to advocate for basic amenities and infrastructure that is beneficial towards the development of his senatorial district.
Apart from the fact that Yele Omogunwa does not have a single bill, he does not also have any record of basic amenities or infrastructure he successfully advocated for on behalf of his people.
His three and half years at the Senate is a waste.

On the Blackout In Ondo South

He said he was not properly informed about the blackouts in Ondo South by the Bring Back Our Light Group when he was accused of displaying lackadaisical attitude towards the suffering of his people following the excruciating darkness created in Ondo South by the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC).
For crying out loud, a senator is like a governor of his senatorial district, how on earth can he say he was not properly briefed by a voluntary group who championed the struggle to restore electricity to people of Ondo South. Is there any need for an individual, or group of individuals or association to inform him that his senatorial district is in darkness before he could wade into the matter?

We do not see any reason Ondo south should recycle failure for the second time. We are relics of his first coming as a senator.

Apart from the fact that he can't be trusted, he is also not capable to represent the people of the senatorial district.
We can't because of tribal sentiment afford to waste another four years at the senate. He was elected in error by the people of Ondo south and we must not repeat such fatal error for another four years.
