Breaking: Election Materials Destroyed As Fire Guts INEC Office In Akwa


 The local government office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Akwa Ibom state has been set ablaze by unknown assailants. 


The state Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) Barr. Mike Igini confirmed the incident. 


VAM News reports that the INEC said through a statement on its Twitter page that the fire broke out early hours of Sunday, May 2, at its office in Essien Udim LGA.

The statement indicated that the inferno, destroyed 345 ballot boxes, 135 voting cubicles, megaphones, water tanks, and office furniture. 


It would be recalled that there have been various cases of fire outbreaks at the electoral commission's offices across the country. 


A section of INEC's complex in Abuja was gutted by fire. The director of publicity and voter education of the INEC, Oluwole Osaze-Uzzi, confirmed the incident on Friday, April 17, 2020. 


He said the fire only affected the office of the director of the election and party monitoring in the building. 


Meanwhile, about four weeks before the conduct of the Ondo state governorship election, the office of the INEC in Akure was in flames.


 INEC in a statement revealed that the fire broke out on the evening of Thursday, September 10, 2020, at its Ondo state head office in Akure.


 The statement indicated that the inferno gutted the container housing Smart Card Readers.
