After Getting over N1m, Lagos Govt Takes over Amputee "Pure Water" Seller's Case

The Lagos State Government has taken over the case of a 26-year-old amputee, Daniel Mary, found hawking water in traffic around Oshodi area of the state.

Mary is a single mother who lost her parents and her right leg in an accident while travelling to her hometown in Ayingba, Kogi State from Katsina State for Yuletide. The accident happened in 2006, forcing her to drop out of school at Junior Secondary School 3.

She started hawking sachet water to earn a living in Onitsha, Anambra State to feed herself and her aged grandmother based in Ayingba.

However, she became pregnant in 2018 but the man denied responsibility for the baby, forcing her to run to Delta State in shame.

Daniel returned to Lagos two weeks ago to hack bottled water in Oshodi traffic and became viral on social media after some commuters posted her pictures online.

Consequently, several donations have started pouring into her bank account from both Nigeria and the diaspora.

A former Imo State governorship candidate, Uche Nwosu gave Daniel a cheque of N500,000 with promise of another N500,000 from his friends.

This prompted the Special Adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Civic Engagement, Aderemi Adebowale to seek her permission in helping her manage her welfare as he expressed concern over her safety since many people are now aware of the large donations entering her bank account.

Adebowale said, “We asked if she wanted the state government to take over the case and help her settle down and she agreed. That is why the Office of Civic Engagement under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu is taking over her case. I have called the Commissioner for Youth and Social Development. She would be settled in a home in Ikorodu for about a week.”
