Kano Patient's Surgery Delayed Over Malfunctioning Generator

Spokesperson of Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH), Hajiya Hauwa Abdullahi has debunked reports that an urgent surgery was postponed amidst the ongoing strike.

Voice Air Media reports that despite negotiations with the Federal Government, the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) commenced an indefinite industrial action on Thursday, 8am.

This amongst other reasons such as generator malfunction, has led to the delay of the surgery at the Aminu Kano hospital.

The patient in excruciating pains was scheduled for the operation since January, 2021.

However, he was on Friday rejected because of the strike.

A source alleged that the patient was wheeled into the theatre but doctors claimed the surgery might not hold due to the malfunctioning generator.

The source also raised an alarm over the patient's health, saying she (the patient) had been losing consciousness due to the abnormal growth in the head.

The hospital recommended that the patient should undergo the surgery before August but that may not be feasible until the strike is called off.

Meanwhile, the Federal Government will decide the fate of the striking doctors, this weekend after accusing them of violating the agreement.

Minister of Labour, Chris Ngige said the government was surprised that the resident doctors could still proceed on their strike after agreements were reached on all their demands.

“You should be asking them (the resident doctors) what went wrong. They signed an agreement that we had with them. It is called a memorandum for action.

“We took all the items one-by-one and had an agreement on each item and we agreed to reconvene in the next four weeks to know the degree and level of implementation.

"People’s lives are involved. Their own is not the same with teachers in universities who can claim that they will teach day and night to cover lost grounds.

“This one is that if you don’t treat a patient, the patient dies and you can’t bring the person back to life. If by this weekend, they are still pressing on with their strike, we will look at all the labour laws and the options available to government including but not limited to enterprise; the employers trying to protect their enterprise and the lives of their patients.”
