Impressive Benzema, Kroos score as Real Madrid defeat Barcelona in epic El Clasico

Hard-fighting Real Madrid escaped with a 2-1 win over eternal rivals Barcelona in Saturday night's edition of the El Clasico.

It was fight to finish at the Valdebebas as the La Liga enters into the home stretch, but Madrid are now on top of the standings, with Atletico having a game in hand.

After Ter Stegen cleared awkwardly for the second time in the first five minutes, Vinicius received the ball and dashed into the Barcelona box. But he overran it a little and Ter Stegen made a fine save.

Toni Kroos made it 2-0 for Real Madrid in the 28th minute. The German took a freekick that deflected off Sergino Dest and then it basically went through Jordi Alba on the line.

Barcelona pulled one back on the hour mark as Oscar Mingueza surely wouldn't have expected to be playing in title decider Clasico back at the start of the season.
