Heavy Shooting As Nigerian Army Kills Vice President of IPOB, 6 Other

A joint operation by the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigerian Army, and Department of State Services has led to the killing of one Commander Ikonson, identified as the vice president-designate of proscribed Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB).

Channels TV reported that six other fighters of the militia group linked to the IPOB were also killed, while two other members were arrested in the joint operation.

Security agents said the late IPOB commander coordinated all the operations of the group in the southeast.

He was said to have spearheaded the attack on the Imo police headquarters on April 5 and several other attacks on security and military personnel and facilities.

VAM News learnt that the operation on the IPOB camp was executed on Saturday morning, April 24, in Awomama Village, Oru East local government area of Imo state.

However, three policemen and one army officer are said to have died during the exchange of gunfire.

Several sophisticated weapons including AK-47 rifles, hundreds of ammunition of different calibre, and charms meant to ward off bullets were recovered from the gunmen.

Meanwhile, the Abia state governor, Okezie Ikpeazu, said the IPOB has placed some southeast governors under the death sentence for yet-to-be-disclosed reasons.

The Punch reported that the governor, who made this known, said he is one of those under the IPOB death sentence. He noted that the issues of marginalisation and inequality raised by the leader of the IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, are valid.

In another report, Governor Dave Umahi of Ebonyi has claimed that most criminals in the southeast perpetrate crimes and claim they are members of the IPOB and Eastern Security Network (ESN). Umahi said the gunmen do this because they believe they will get the sympathy of Nigerians for belonging to IPOB and the ESN, both of which are rumoured and alleged to be persecuted by the federal government.

According to Sahara Reporters, he explained that there are bandits and terrorists in all parts of Nigeria, but that these persons are in desperate need of a name or a designation for themselves.
