Illegal Mining In Osun: Gov. Oyetola Inaugurates MIREMCO

 


The Osun state governor, Gboyega Oyetola has today inaugurated the committee of Osun mineral resources and environmental committee.

The event took place in exco hall, Osun state government Secretariat at Abeere. The events was graced by the member of the Osun state executives, some APC members and the press.

Gov. Oyetola said, the inauguration of Osun Mineral Resources And Environmental Management Committee (MIREMCO) today is another major steps towards lifting Osun state out of economic misery, re-defining and shoring up our socio-economic life as a state.

He said "the appointment and inauguration of the committee are in line with the Nigeria Minerals and Mining Act 2007, which empowers the committee to oversee the regulation of the entire mining operations in the state and to discuss and advise the Minister of Solid Minerals on matters affecting encroachment, trespass, security, social unrest, pollution and environmental degradation of any land on which any mineral is being extracted as it relates to all license holders within the State."

Also, he implored the committee "as experienced professionals and elders, to employ peace management, conflict resolution and diplomatic skills and competencies to manage the thorny issues arising from mineral exploitation."

He urged the Federal environmental agencies such as NESREA to live up to their duties of enforcing environmental standards and compliance in the mining sector.

Prince Omolade Binuyo the inaugurated chairman of Osun MIREMCO while addressing the audience said, Nigeria is endowed with natural resources such as: granite, iron ore, coal, gold and many more. 

Furthermore, he said Osun state is currently mininng gold in this following Local Government which are: Atakumosa East and West, Ilesa East and West, Ife East, Ife South, Ife North, Irewole, Boripe and Boluwaduro respectively. 

Also, he said Osun have other mineral resources tagged mica, columbite, granite and gold etc. But the chief among all the minerals is the one cherish by man through ages, a metal that does not tarnish 'gold' which is abundant in Osun. 

Lastly, he stated some abnormalities like environmental devastation, community disturbances, kidnapping and murders as inimacalities that can hinder the growth and prosperity which the mineral is expected to bring to the state.
