The national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu, has said that Nigeria is competing with bandits to recruit unemployed youths.

TheCable reports that while speaking at the colloquium to mark his 69th birthday on Monday, March 29, the former governor of Lagos also said Nigeria is under-policed while grappling with a high rate of unemployment.

VAM News gathered that 33% of the Nigerian youths are unemployed.

He said:

“We are competing with armed robbers and bandits to recruit from the youths who are unemployed; 33 percent unemployed."

The Nation also reports that Tinubu, however, asked the federal government to recruit at least 50 million youths into the Nigerian Army.

The former governor of Lagos state said taking the step would boost Nigeria’s fight against terrorism and insecurity.

Tinubu added:

“We are under-policed and we are competing with armed robbers and bandits to recruit from the youths who are unemployed. Recruit 50 million youths into the army and take away from their recruitment source, what they will eat cassava, corn, will grow here."

He said the recruitment process should not emphasise education or literacy but willingness to fight criminals.
