Idris Ajibola's Death: Why Osun Police Brutality Panel Subpoenaed Two NSCDC Officers


Two officers of the Nigerian security and civil corps Inspector Jimi Awoniyi and Togun Babatunde have been summoned to appear before the ongoing hearing of petitions against police brutality at the Osun state panel of Inquiry.


VAM News gathered that,the two officers were part of the JTF team that chase idris Ajibola to death on the 15th day of September 2020.


In the petition written to the commissioner of police Osun state command by kanmi Ajibola a lawyer to the deceased family calling upon to investigate the officers that chased Idris Ajibola to death in the combined team of joint task force JTF.


The petitioner had information that,two of the officers involved in the chasing of Idris Ajibola and his friends were members of staff of the Nigerian security and civil corps NSCDC Inspector Jimi Awoniyi and Togun Babatunde respectively.



Thereafter, the panel ordered the subpoena on them to appear before the panel on the 5th of March 2021 and adjourned for further defence.



The panel also ordered the state ministry of justice to provide relevant documents about the prosecution of the petition by Oluwatoyin Adetona whose her two kids were crushed to death by a police officer John Aguda while driving police vehicle in Ilesha Osun state in 2016.


The panel directed police authority to provide details information about the alleged dismissed police officer or otherwise.



The panel later adjourned the  case  for both ministry as well as police to provide necessary needed information.


In another petition determined at the panel was the case of Dele Nafiu over the death of his son Ismail killed by SARS officer at one guest house in Iwo,Osun state on the 18th of july 2020.


The police team came to do some investigation and at end of the day, they find out the deceased has been buried and the father of the deceased was alleged to have collected the sum of 1.6million naira from police for compensation which he later denied.


The petition at the panel seeking justice for killing Ismail as counsel to petitioner Fatai Ajani called three witnesses, father of the deceased, owner and manager of the guest house, testified that,one of the SARS operatives killed Ismail.


It was also alleged that, suspected SARS operatives allegedly stole over 4million naira from the deceased and that the over 900,000 naira left behind which the suspected SARs operatives didn't see after killing the deceased with gunshot, was later released to the father of the deceased.


The police witness Oyedele Festus cross examined by the counsel to the petitioner to establish the truth and discountenance the witness evidence.


The petitioner however demanded justice as well as thorough investigation and the culprit be brought to book.


Respondent and petitioner however closed cases and were given 7 days notice to file and serve.


The panel adjourned to Friday 12 of March 2021 for adoption of final written addresses.


Other petition by Oluwatoyin Adetona base on good governance and leadership assessment Initiative was struck out base on the leave sought by the counsel before the panel.
