Akungba Tragedy: NANS make case for innocent students killed by Dangote truck


The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has gone a step further in getting justice for Students that lost their lives as well as the injured in a ghastly accident involving a truck belonging to Dangote group at the main gate of Adekinle Ajasin University, Akungba Ondo state.

Recall that NANS leadership had  in a press statement issued after the supervision of burial arrangement of the deceased students among the 15 total victims of the tragic accident, demanded justice for the innocent souls lost and action against Dangote Groups in reaction to the ugly incident. 

The association in the statement made demands to Dangote group in order to avoid boycott of its product and granting its truck persona non grata 10km away from tertiary institutions across the country.

Meanwhile, the Apex Students body has said that agreements have been reached with Dangote group to ensure that the departed students do not die in vain. 

The president of the association, Comrade Asefon Sunday disclosed this in a statement issued after meeting with the management of dangote group on thursday. 

Acording to him; "yesterday we  met with the management of Dangote Groups where we reiterated our demands on behalf of our fallen students and safety of entire Nigerian masses, and the following were agreed:


1. That Dangote Groups will compensate the family of the deseased students.

2. That as part of compensation, Dangote Group should give employment slot to qualified member each of the bereaved families and where there are no qualified family member for employment, Dangote should award scholarship  up to the university level to a member of the family.

3. We requested that Dangote  through tax arrangement with Federal Government should fix the Isua-Akungba Akoko road.

4. That in their CSR, projects around the school metropolis by  Dangote groups should executed and name in honor of the victims of 23rd January 2021 truck crash in AAU Akungba to immortalize all including our fallen students.

An all inclusive committee was set up to ensure the agreements reached in the meeting are executed within the stipulated time." He said. 

Present at the meeting are, NANS Senate President, Comr Chuks Okafor, Vice President National Affairs Comr Yasiz Tanko, Comr Samuel Kappo NANS Zone D Coordinator and other elected Executive of NANS. The Leadership of NANS JCC Ondo State were also in attendance while the SUG President of AAU-Akungba was unavoidably absent. 

The NANS president advised those who are bent on undermining and misrepresenting the new leadership of NANS through malicious and ridiculous lies for personal reasons to be warned as their day of reckoning is near.

He also reiterated that NANS under his leadership will do everything possible to ensure improve welfare and adequate protection of the interest of Nigerian Students at home and in the diaspora.
