AAUA Accident: Concern Grows As Management, Govt Keep Mum On Compensation, Investigation

Reactions and controversies are continuing to trail the decision of the management of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko to reopen school and commence examination after the institution was closed following a ghastly accident involving Students of the varsity.

Recall that on January 24, a trailer reportedly belonging to Dangote Ltd rammed into shops a few meters away from the main gate of the institution leaving about 9 students dead.

The trailer according to eyewitnesses lost control and rammed into a set of shops along the road. This ugly incident prompted the school authority to order the immediate closure of the school of the institution after Students protested the killing of their colleagues.

The protesting Students alleged that "government and the institution did not take their lives seriously".

However, events took a new turn when the management of the school in a circular dated February 15 directed the students to resume and prepare for examination. The circular was silent on whether the institution have taken steps to support the families of the deceased or actions the government and school management intend to take to prevent future occurrences. This undue silence from the management have raised people's curiosity on whether this incident will be swept under the carpet like the previous sad ones whereby there was no compensation nor investigation by the school and government, leaving the lost souls to die in vain.

A Twitter user, Samuel Adeyanju (@yanjus4christ) explains the need for the management of AAUA and the government to take actions to compensate the bereaved families and further investigate the incident. According to him; " we must not continue to be proud of of our lack of value for human lives in Nigeria

"Some of these students whose lives were lost to these accidents were in many ways the hope for their parents siblings and relatives".

"Unaccountability on the part of our leaders must no longer be taken as norms". He stated.

It is in this regard that the management of AAUA are enjoined to communicate what actions (if any) they have taken or have in plan to compensate the families of the students, prevent further sad ocurences and also to see that the lost souls get justice by ensuring that the killer driver is brought to book and made to face the full wrath of the law.
