'We didn't appoint Ganduje as a visiting professor' - American University reveals shock revelation

The East Carolina University (ECU) has dismissed reports that it issued appointed Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State as visiting professor.

According to the institution, the letter Ganduje got was unauthorised by the appropriate officials.

This was disclosed by Premium Times which reached out to the university to confirm the authenticity of the appointment.

In response to the enquiry, the university attached the letter it sent to Ganduje which was signed by its Interim Provost and Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, B. Grant Hayes.

In the letter, the institution informed the Kano governor that Dr. Victor Mbarika who sent the letter of appointment was not authorised to do so.

Part of the letter to Ganduje read:

"Only the Chancellor, myself, or another official identified in ECU’s published statement on Delegation of Contracting Authority for the Division of Academic Affairs may authorize or sign appointment letters under which faculty are employed. Dr. Mbarika is not such an official."

Ganduje's spokesman made the announcement

It must have come as a surprise to some Nigerians when news surfaced on Monday, November 30, that Governor Ganduje had been appointed a visiting professor of e-governance and international affairs at the ECU despite his "dollar scandal"

According to the governor's chief press secretary Abba Anwar, Ganduje got the appointment because he was a "source of motivation to Nigerian youths, both at home and in the diaspora."

In 2018, a video had surfaced online showing Ganduje receiving bundles of dollars and putting them into his white dress known as ‘babariga’ in the northern part of Nigeria.

The video was trailed by controversy as the Kano government wasted no time in branding it fake, threatening to sue the media that published it.

An investigation was launched but the Kano high court stopped it, saying the state House of Assembly does not have the power to investigate or invite or summon the governor.
