Nigerian govt commences payment of N30,000 grants for taxi, okada riders, others

The federal government has commenced N30,000 grants for taxi, bus, okada, Keke Napep, Uber, Bolt drivers, and cart pushers across the country.

Under the government's artisan support scheme, a total of 333,000 artisans and transport business operators nationwide will get one-time operations grant of N30,000 per beneficiary to reduce the effects of income loss due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The initiative is part of the transport support track under the Buhari administration's MSME Survival Fund schemes for artisans and transporters handled by the office of the vice president.

VAM News gathered that the launch of the transport track last Monday, November 30 follows the successful take-off of the Artisans’ Support track on Thursday, October 1.

While the artisans' track is under the Survival Fund, the transport track is a different scheme also under the fund.

A statement issued by Laolu Akande, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo's spokesman, on Sunday, December 6 indicates that verified artisans have started receiving the N30,000 one-time grants, for Nigerians operating in the transport business.

Those benefitting from the initiative include rideshare drivers (Uber, Bolt, etc.), taxi drivers, bus drivers, Keke Napep riders, okada riders, cart pushers, etc

Nigerians have also been encouraged to speak up if anyone tries to charge a fee or subvert the arrangement.

Meanwhile, some Nigerians have been commenting on the initiative via social media.

Aminu Ajebo wrote on Twitter:

“There has never been an administration that supports SMEs like this administration. I haven’t benefited but I saw one Salisu, a keke napep rider rejoicing after he got his Covid19 support.”

Abiola Oladeji Olumu wrote:

“This is commendable. State governments should also complement federal efforts in these programmes. We rely too much on the federal government.”

Babagana Maina wrote:

“That is a welcome idea indeed, we know you're trying your possible best.”

The MSMEs Survival Fund scheme is a component of the Nigerian Economic Sustainability Plan, NESP, which was developed by an Economic Sustainability Committee established by President Muhammadu Buhari in March 2020.

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, heads the committee which produced and is overseeing the implementation of the plan.
