NYSC retracts COVID-19 cases in three camps, says no corps member tested positive in Ebonyi

The National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, says the social media report on some Corps Members testing positive to Coronavirus in Lagos, Kano and FCT Camps is fake, saying there is no cause for alarm.

Recall that the Coordinator, National Youth Service Corps, Federal Capital Territory, Mrs Walida Isa, said five prospective corps members have tested positive for COVID-19.

While the corps also disclosed that cases were recorded in some other camps.

But in a new development, the NYSC Director, Press and Public Relations, Mrs Adenike Adeyemi, in a statement issued in Abuja on Monday night said that no Corps Member tested COVID-19 positive either before entry or while in the orientation camps.

The statement reads, “The attention of Management has been drawn to the news making the rounds about some Corps Members testing positive to Coronavirus in Lagos, Kano and FCT Camps.

‘The true position is that no Corps Member in any of the NYSC camp is COVID-19 positive.

“It is pertinent to add that the NYSC is in collaboration with the Nigeria Centre For Disease Control (NCDC), and the Centre maintains very strong presence in all the NYSC camps nationwide.

“As a proactive measure, all Prospective Corps Members were tested for COVID-19 before being admitted into the camps. Those that tested positive were handed over to the NCDC for treatment and management.

“Accordingly, the general public is hereby assured that the 37 Camps of the Scheme are safe, as COVID- 19 safety protocols are strictly adhered to.

“There is no cause for alarm. Both the Scheme and NCDC are up to the task of safeguarding the lives of Corps Members and Camp officials.”

Also,the state Coordinator of the National Youths Service Corps (NYSC) in Ebonyi, Mrs. Mercy Bamai, said on Monday no corps member deployed to the state had tested positive for COVID-19.

Bambi, who disclosed this during the swearing-in ceremony of the corps members deployed under the 2020 Batch B—Stream one A made at the permanent orientation camp in Afikpo, added that officials at the camp officials also tested negative for the virus.

She urged the corps members to take every aspect of the three-week orientation course seriously and observe the COVID-19 protocols.

The coordinator said: “The 560 corps members consisting of 277 males and 283 females were sworn-in with strict adherence to COVID-19 protocols.

“The NYSC management provided COVID-19 preventive items at strategic locations of the camp, maintained two metres distancing in the accommodation and sitting arrangements in the halls among others.”
