NANS North East speaks on ASUU strike, Endorses Presidential Candidate 2020

...49 votes will be given to the candidate

COMMUNIQUE ISSUED AT THE END OF THE TWO-DAY NORTH-EAST MAIDEN STAKEHOLDERS’ MEETING OF THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF NIGERIAN STUDENTS (NANS), HELD IN DAMATURU, YOBE STATE

The North-East Caucus of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), which comprises of Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Taraba and Yobe States, held its first maiden stakeholders meeting, between 21st and 22nd November, 2020 in Damaturu, Yobe State where issues affecting the future of the region and its course were discussed. However, the following resolutions were reached upon:

ASUU Strike: It has been observed that the eight-month closure of public universities in Nigeria as a result of the industrial action of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) continue to cripple the education sector in land and breeds widespread socio-economic problems, especially in the North-East which is just recovering from a decade-old insurgency. As such, the North East Governors’ Forum is called upon to step into the lingering debate, while in the overall interest of the country the Federal Government and ASUU should shift their grounds for classes to be opened.

Regional Peace and Security: The heads of security institutions have been saluted and urged to put additional efforts in the fight against Boko Haram insurgency and other forms of insecurity in the North-East. However, due to the continuous ethno-religious clashes in Taraba State, more specifically the Tiv/Jukun scenario, Federal and State Governments have been challenged to apply new techniques of addressing the unrest in the overall interest of humanity, peace and security. Additionally, the hike in the price of food stuff, fuel, electricity and other commodities, in this era of COVID-19 pandemic has been condemned, as it constitutes threats to peace and security. Thus, while concerns on tapping from our natural deposits by governments would help in considerable revenue mobilization, youths and students should continuously be partnered with in the drive for secured economy in the region.

Regional Development: Since its take-up, the activities of the North East Development Commission (NEDC) are being studied by various groups, including the students, and appropriate communications would be made in due course. Invariably, President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR and the Governors of the North-East (H.E Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, H.E Hon. Mai Mala Buni, H.E Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, H.E Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, H.E Darius Dickson Ishaku and H.E Sen. Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed) are saluted for their sterling performances and charged to create new policies that would open more opportunities for the youths and students, especially for those in the North East, who are greatly suffering from the decade-old insurgency. However, the poor conditions of road network such as the Jalingo-Numan, Numan-Gombe, Gombe-Bauchi, Gombe-Potiskum, etc and other physical infrastructure in the region have adverse effects on the economy, as such calls for serious concerns from authorities.

NANS 2020 National Convention: In the interest of prosperity and progress, the 49 votes of the North-East delegates in the forthcoming convention, and any relevant subsequent engagements, has been unified and solidified. However, the Dauda Gombe-led committee is mandated to make necessary regional arrangements for the transportation, feeding and unified accommodation of the delegates and other attendees of the 2020 convention from the region.

Equally, the 49 votes will be given to a single candidate which will be decided and announce prior to the election date.

Stakeholders’ Leadership: In the interim, six persons representing the states of the region are to pilot the affairs of the movement for the period of three months beginning from 22nd November, 2020. These include Comrades Dauda Muhammad Gombe and Udi Pastore who are to serve as the Chairman and Secretary General, while Comrades Mohammed Bappare, Prince Mohammed Sani Hassan, Suleiman Muhammad Sarki and Ibrahim Ibrahim are to serve in other capacities. More so, sufficient efforts are on top gear for the formidable formation of advisory council and governing board, which would be communicated in due course.
