Mother dumps Two-week-old baby at School gate in Akure

The State Ministry of Women Affairs have confirmed the recovery of an abandoned Two-week-old baby dumped in front of a Nursery and Primary School at Commander Way Street in Oke-Ijebu, Akure, the Ondo state capital.

The gateman of the school, identified as Gbenga Adelusi, explained that “the baby was dropped at the Nursery and Primary school gate at about 5:30 am on the November 23, 2020 early hours of day where I work.

“I was on my morning duty moving round to check every part of the school before handing over to the dayguard, when I heard the cry of a new born baby from the gate area and I was shocked.

“I started wondering who could have brought the baby to day care section at the early hours of the day.

“On getting to the gate, the baby’s cry became stronger and I saw the baby wrapped in a black small Ghana-must-go bag, dumped on the ground, he narrated."

Upon receipt of the report, the baby boy was well dressed and was left on the floor beside the school gate with some clothes wrapped as the baby’s head support.

Ministry of Women affairs react

The State Ministry of Women Affairs in charge of abandoned babies, Mrs Yemisi Olagoke an official of the ministry confirmed the story.

She said the baby was a two-week-old boy, adding that they had reported to the police as they were working with men of The Nigerian Police and that the baby had been taken to the motherless babies home along Oba-Ile road.

Olagoke, who explained that there are procedures to adopt a baby, stated that anyone who cannot care for her baby could approach the Ministry’s Welfare Department of the Governor’s office rather than dumping them.

She added that the biological mother of the baby who allegedly dropped the baby had not shown up.
