Five things we learned as Tottenham thrash 10-Man United 6-1

By  Tunde Gbotemi

Manchester United turned in an awful display to get hammered at home to Tottenham by 6 goals to one (1).

Here is a look at five things we learned from this humiliating result.

       •Not good enough
This was an abject performance from United, especially after going a goal up after just a minute.

An early penalty gave United an advantage, and after that, the team seemed to switch off.

Tottenham were sharper, showed more attacking ambition, and were ruthless in front of goal.

In attack United lacked a threat, even when we had 11 men on the pitch.

This was a game United will want to quickly put behind them, but there is now a two-week break.

Perhaps the break will be good, but United sign off on a moment of intense negativity.

      •Defensive problems
Eric Bailly coming into the team was a popular team selection at the expense of Victor Lindelof.

The first two goals were down to Harry Maguire’s hapless defending.

Bailly then gave the ball away for Tottenham’s third goal, and by that time, United’s defence was all at sea.

The errors continued into the second half, with the team cut open too easily, while David de Gea barely made a save.

This team looked like a side which need better coaching. There are big problems at United.

      •Red card farce
Anthony Martial’s red card did not help. It was a harsh decision, and one he will learn from.

Erik Lamela threw himself to the floor after receiving a tap to the face from Martial, after doing the same to the Frenchman.

In the age of VAR, it is a farce that the decision was a) not rescinded, and b) Lamela faced no action at all.

There is no consistency, and in this instance, VAR failed to do it’s job.

      •Signings a distraction
All the talk heading into the game was about potential signings for United.

This can’t be used as an excuse, but it underlines how this squad is not yet complete.

At the same time, this is what you get for leaving business until the last moment.

Tottenham got their signings done early, and are benefitting as a result.

•United are disorganised off the pitch, and disorganised on it

At some stage the farce behind the scenes at United trickles down to the players and management, and this was a case in point.

If United think a few last minute signings will solve the problems, the club are very wrong.

New signings would be a distraction, welcome, but a sticking plaster on bigger issues at a club where the core is rotten right to the top.

Taking stock of United’s start to the season, three points from three games is not good enough.

United have a tough three league games upcoming after the break, against Newcastle, Chelsea, and Arsenal.

There will need to be a big response, and it won’t be easy with Champions League ties in the midst of that run.

United have caused themselves bigger problems with this poor start, and it could be a costly one at the end of the season.
