JUST IN: Akufo Addo, Elected New ECOWAS Chairman

Nana Akufo-Addo, President of the Republic of Ghana, has been elected as the new Chairman of the Economic Community of West Africa States at the ongoing 57th ECOWAS Summit in Niamey, Republic of Niger.

During the summit, President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari called on African leaders to stop elongating their tenure in office, saying it was becoming a source of trouble.




     
The last time a Ghanaian President was elected ECOWAS Chairman was during the 44th Ordinary Session of ECOWAS where former President Mahama, took over from Ivorian President Allasane Ouattara.










President Akufo-Addo, however, is scheduled to give his acceptance speech later at the ongoing summit.


The ECOWAS summit, which is being held at the Mahatma Gandhi International Conference Centre will see leaders discussing reports from the 44th Ordinary Session of the Mediation and Security Council among others.










The leaders will also discuss other matters including the COVID-19 situation in West Africa, the ECOWAS Single Currency Programme, and the political impasse in Mali.


President Akufo-Addo was accompanied by the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Shirley Ayorkor Botchway MP; Minister for Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta; Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Ernest Addison, and officials of the Presidency and the Foreign Ministry.
