JUST IN: Again, Nigerians march in Osun over electricity tariff, fuel price hike
By Tunde Olorungbotemi
Again, Nigerians are marching in the streets of Osogbo, Osun State capital, in protest against the recent hike in electricity tariff and petrol price in the country.
VOICE AIR MEDIA recalls that the JAF had on September 4, 2020 held a protest in Osogbo over the increment.
However, on Wednesday morning, the JAF protested again and took off from Freedom park in Osogbo around 9:00am.
They came out with different placards showing different inscriptions. Some of the inscriptions read: ‘Enough is Enough!’, ‘Revert Pump Price Now!’, ‘All We Want Is a Better Life’, ‘Electricity Tariff Hike Is ill-Conceived’, among others.
The electricity distribution companies (DisCos) across the country started the implementation of a new electricity tariff regime, on Tuesday, following the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission instruction that DisCos are to maintain a N4
tariff for all customers consuming less than 50kWh of energy per month and petrol prices have been increased three times in the last three months with a litre now currently sold at N162 since the beginning of September.
Speaking during the protest, Comrade Olatunji Nurudeen, the Public Relations Officer of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Southwest said : “I spoke on behalf of South West Students in a very peaceful protest organized by Joint Action Front, Osun State chapter earlier today. I told the masses the readiness of Nigerian Students to shut down Nigeria if President Muhammadu and his officials don’t do the needful.
“As the Spokesperson of NANS SOUTH WEST, I painstakingly explained to Nigerians the demonic tactics of President Muhammadu Buhari led federal government to compound the conundrums of the citizenry.”
Many Nigerians have condemned the latest development and called on opposition leaders to lead massive protests.
