Ondo LG 2020: We will Reduce Out-of-School Children and End Crimes in Idanre, Says Akinrotohun
By One Class
The Social Democratic Party(SDP) Deputy Chairmanship aspirant for Idanre local government in the forthcoming Ondo council elections, Mr Idowu Akinrotohun, has said the administration will do everything at their disposal to enroll all out-of-school children and finally put an end to domestic and sexual violence faced by children in the community.
He made this known in a media chat with the Bankyposal Media team Yesterday.
In his words, 51,046 out of 87,507 NCP project population of children in Idanre are School age children. It is quite unfortunate that preliminary study has revealed over 20% of the 51,046 School Age children in Idanre are not enrolled for Basic education. This does sadden my mind as those who are seen as the future hope of our community are deprived of getting basic education.
He identified negligence of parents, wickedness, broken home and poverty as the major causes of this menace. 'How will you feel seeing children less than 14 years of age at Ojota, Agosile area, Alade roundabout, some restaurants in Ofosu and other spots in the community during learning hours?
I feel dejected and feel our society is failing these young ones'.
Akinrotohun also identified poverty, the quest for wealth and not valuing child rights as some of the major challenges facing street hawking by children in Idanre. He noted children who try to resist this act from their parents/guardians are most time inflicted with different sorts of domestic violence. He revealed this act (street hawking) had put a lot of children, especially girls, in danger as some of them are sexually molested by evil men who pretend as potential customers or ones who want to render help.
On how to curtail and minimize these challenges, Akinrotohun said if Bankole Akinselure is elected as chairman and him as Deputy Chairman, their administration will ensure maximum sensitization of parents on importance of Basic Education and the dangers in street hawking by children through their PTA, associations, worship centres and other available mediums. He also revealed women empowerment and scholarship for the less privileged will be embarked on.
He reiterated that their administration will work closely with Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT), SUBEB, NAPPs and other relevant education agencies/stakeholders on how to monitor, supervise and ensure quality education delivery at the basic level in Idanre.
Our administration will harness and build on every measure put in place by the Federal and State Governments to ensure all children in Idanre have access to basic quality education. Akinrotohun said.
Furthermore, he made it known that a committee which will comprise stakeholders across different education organizations in Idanre will be set up to find out reasons for the increase in out-of-school children in Idanre and also find lasting solutions to every identified charllenge.
He congratulated all children in the local government for this year's 2020 special children day celebration and said their administration will work tirelessly in ensuring that the belief we have in our children as our lasting hope for the future is fulfilled. He enjoined them to bear this hard time, as this perilous time will soon be over.
