A suspected case of Coronavirus has been reported in one of the communities in Akoko local government area of Ondo State.

More details have emerged about the coronavirus case reported in Akoko community of Ondo State.

An health worker who craved anonymity narrated the ordeal.

He said the case (a middle aged man) arrived from Lagos, and stayed with his sister in Ikare Akoko for about a week.

While in Ikare the case was attended to by a Nurse at home but had to go to Ipe Akoko for herbal treatment.

It was when he started coughing and sneezing uncontrollably, that prompted his relations to call the appropriate authority.

Our source said he had since been taken to the Infectious Disease Hospital (IDH) in Akure.

The state Epidemiologist, Dr Stephen Fagbemi who spoke with The Precision NG on phone, confirmed that a case from Akoko is with the IDH.

Asked why the state government has decided to keep mum on details of new cases, Dr Fagbemi said it has not been helpful as there have been reported cases of stigmatization and misinformation about communities where a case is reported.

“What does it matter to them which town? we can give details about local government but not for communities.

“There have been reported issue of lynching, attack on communities and that is what we are trying to avoid.

“We can give information about the local government as we don’t have problem with that, but we don’t want a situation whereby one town will gang up against another by discouraging people from interacting with them.

“I think people should take their safety more important rather than looking for details of the new cases,” he said.

Ondo state presently has 15 confirmed cases, while six of them have been discharged.
