Ondo: MPN threatens ODIEC on LG Polls
The Mega Party of Nigeria (MPN), has threatened to take legal action against the Ondo State Independent Electoral Commission, (ODIEC) for excluding candidates of the party from the forthcoming April 18 local government election in the state.
In a Protest letter addressed to the Chairman, Ondo State Independent Electoral Commission, the State Chairman of MPN, Prince Biyi Poroye said his party considers such exclusion as an expensive error which the commission should be corrected with immediate promptness.
“Our attention has been drawn to the exclusion of the names of our candidates across the eighteen (18) Local Government of Ondo State in the list released and published by the Hope Newspaper on the Wednesday 18th day of March 2020 which was purported to have emanated and authorized by your office for the public notice and consumption.
“In case the said exclusion is based on the advice you said you were waiting to get from the Ondo State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr Kola Olawoye SAN, in respect of the pronouncement then made by Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), we utilize this medium to put the record straight in order for the commission to be timeously guided in doing the needful.
“An interlocutory injunction
was sought through an application dated 15/5/2019 by the parties which were pronounced being deregistered by Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in the Federal High Court of Nigeria, in the Abuja Judicial Division, Abuja.
“The application was attended to and caused subsequent Ruling of the Court which restrained INEC from deregistering the plaintiffs, of which Mega Party Of Nigeria (MPN) is one, pending the determination of the substantive Suit. The copy of the Ruling is attached for your perusal.
“By legal implication of the Ruling, Mega Party Of Nigeria is one of the viable political parties that can participate in the Ondo State Local Government election.
“Hence, the exclusion of the party(MPN) in the list is unlawful and has its grave consequences in respect to the electorates’ psyche in deciding who rules as the chairman of the council in various local Government in Ondo State.
Poroye therefore enjoined ODIEC to include MPN candidates for the local government election to prevent litigation.
“We therefore implore you to correct such error by using the same method or medium of which the information of exclusion of our party from the list was transmitted to the public in order to correct the negative opinion that the public might have formed about our party (MPN) in respect of the forthcoming Ondo State Local Government Election and likely legal redress that may ensue if not handled as requested,” the MPN Chairman warned.
