Ondo: Group calls ODIEC, Akeredolu to suspend LG poll
A group, Ondo State Political Action Group (OSPAG), has called on the Oluwarotimi Akeredolu led Ondo State government and the State Independent Electoral Commission (ODIEC) to postpone with immediate effect the forthcoming Local Government Elections billed for April 18, 2020.
This is to serve as a precautionary measure to forestall the spread of the Coronavirus in the state that has been ravaging almost the entire countries of the world.
The group made this known in a statement after her meeting at the NUJ Press center, Akure where they stressed the need for the state government to tighten all loop holes particularly our motor parks, Churches, Mosques, Schools and most importantly, postpone the Local government election slated to hold on April 18, as measures to proactively safeguard the infiltration of the deadly virus into the state.
They reiterated that’s it’s government responsibility in world over to protect the lives and properties of its citizens regardless of social strata. This call is coming on the heels of a suspected case reported recently in the state.
OSPAG, also charged the state government to be alive to her responsibilities by putting in place necessary health care facilities to combat the spread of the virus and go on sensitization tour to the public particularly the rural dwellers on the prevention, control and management of the coronavirus which has put the entire world on her kneels.
The CoviD-19, as it’s called, is a pandemic disease that is currently ravaging the world, hence Ondo State must not relax in her fight.
In an interview with pressmen, the Coordinator of the group, Hon. Oladeji Ebisemiju, said “the need to put the election on hold at this crucial time is germane as INEC had already put on hold bye elections in Imo, Plateau and Bayelsa States to effectively curtail the spread the virus. Ondo State must deploy all her resources to battle the virus.
“We can’t afford to lose lives because of an election, we therefore advise the state government led by Arakunrin Akeredolu to with immediate effect postpone the election till further notice until the fight is won against the deadly disease.
Also speaking, the Secretary of the group, Hon. Olusegun AKINSEHINDE, said “we are at critical stage in our nation state where we must not treat with kidsglove matters that bothers on the health care and the general wellbeing of the people.
“Postponing the local government election will be an appropriate thing to do by the state government because the election will be a potential ground for the spread as people will be seen in clusters during rallies and on election day, queueing up to vote. This should not be encouraged.
The group also commended the state government for taken some steps in shutting down schools and putting on hold events across the state as to further curb the its possible spread and also salute the efforts of the present administration in repositioning Ondo State on the path of progress and development.
