...Four things we learned as United lose to Burnley

By Bright Olorungbotemi

Manchester United were always going to find Burnley a tough nut to crack. In recent years, at Old Trafford, the Clarets have come through relatively unscathed. And it was a similar story on Wednesday night, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side slumping to a 2-0 defeat.

Manchester United's player and Burnley's players

Manchester United these days, and how fans feel about the club, then one look at Old Trafford on wednesday night would have proven a point.

The stadium that has seen so much success in recent years was far from full.

Watching on Sky Sports and empty seats could be seen around the once-great gladatorial arena.

It's almost as if they don't expect United to win these games anymore. Victory over Burnley would have been virtually assured when Sir Alex Ferguson ruled the roost.

Four things we learned below:
•Absolutely awful without Rashford
This may be the lowest point of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s stint as manager.

United were desperately poor, low on creativity, and wasted the chances we did get.

The team defended poorly too, looking tired and poorly disciplined. With key players out injured, there is not enough quality in the team left.

What’s worrying is there appears to be no help on the horizon coming either.

That’s two games without Marcus Rashford since he got injured, and two defeats. The team need to prove they can win without him, and haven’t been able to do so.
Martial is getting the biggest challenge of his career
Anthony Martial has the opportunity he has wanted ever since his first season at Old Trafford, to lead the line.

He is learning that without Marcus Rashford, it is not at all easy, and his inconsistency can’t hide.

To be fair Rashford struggled without Martial earlier in the season, but the Frenchman is not helping himself.

After missing a sitter at Anfield, he blew a chance in the first half against Burnley when he took too many touches inside the box and was tackled. The visitors scored an opener minutes later.

This is Martial’s biggest challenge, and he is failing it so far.
Teams will keep testing United now, and Solskjaer has to fix the problem.
Empty seats and anti-Glazer chants
All is not well at Old Trafford. Empty seats were seen dotted around the stadium. And by the end supporters were racing for the exits with 10 minutes to go.

Supporters voiced ongoing frustrations with owners the Glazers and chief executive Ed Woodward with chants during the game.
Signings are needed badly
The need for new faces was obvious before the game and it was glaring when the team was announced.

An attacking front four of Anthony Martial, Juan Mata, Dan James and Andreas Pereira is simply not good enough for the level United aspire to be at.

Mason Greenwood will be mixed in at times, but United need to be cautious with his playing time.

There are not enough fit options in midfield to give Fred and Nemanja Matic a proper rest either.

Getting in a couple of new faces in before transfer deadline will lift the fans and help the players out a great deal.
