Young Lawyer calls for synergy between NBA & Diaspora Commission to tackle trafficking & irregular migration

In a week-long Annual General Conference held by the Nigerian Bar Association where a wide range of topics were examined and debated by prominent legal luminaries, academics & political figures across the country gathered by VAM correspondent.

Barrister Desmond Tobechukwu Orisewezie in a statement put to a panel of resource persons on Wednesday, Aug. 28th 2019 at Zinnia Hall, Eko Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos State, inquired about the plans of the NBA in curbing the embarrassing situation trafficking & irregular migration of Nigerian citizens across the globe. 


The Lead speaker of the particular NBA conference session on MODERN DAY SLAVERY, TRAFFICKING IN PERSONS AND IRREGULAR MIGRATION Professor Joy Ngozi Ezeilo OON who is also the current Dean of the Faculty of Law, University of Nigeria in her supportive response to that of Barr. Orisewezie declared that time is now for the NBA to set out funds to support projects or initiatives by local groups aimed at eradicating internal migration and trafficking both within and outside Nigeria.

She added that the American Bar Association has similar support systems, therefore the NBA can do same to assist in stopping the global trafficking of Nigerians, She equally noted that NBA should not only be perceived as a recipient of donations but should also be seen to give back to the society in like manner.


In her words, Human trafficking is “the fastest growing criminal enterprise in the world,” and there are many “hot spots” for human trafficking across the nation, “No community is immune” to exploitation and trafficking, she said.


The panel was Chaired by a former NBA President, Dame Priscilla Kuye and other speaker includes, Barr. Kaka S. Lawan The Former Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Borno State and Dr. Anslem Abonyi, Lecturer Faculty of Law, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University.
