Rape: Mrs. Akeredolu to train women in Taekwondo knockouts as self-defence in Ondo

As part of her efforts at curbing rape menace in Ondo state, the wife of the state governor, Mrs. Betty Anyanwu Akeredolu has announced her intention to train females, both young and old in Taekwondo knockouts as a self- defence against rapists.

Mrs. Akeredolu took this decision in response to the recent rape of a student of Adekunle Ajasin University Akungba Akoko last week by Soldiers in uniform at checkpoint.

She disclosed this during her visit to the State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Undie Adie in his office to personally give him a protest letter as part of her strategies to combat rape in the state.

To show her readiness to combat the act with full force, Mrs. Akeredolu introduced an expert in Taekwondo skill who she has already engaged her service for the task.

She appealed to the Police to ensure that the perpetrators are treated as criminals for violating a civilian and be prosecuted accordingly.

According to her, soldiers are supposed to be saviours for civilians but this incidence has proven that Ondo women are not safe, hence, the need to equip them with Taekwondo skill as a self-defence.

“I’m making a public announcement that we are going to promote Taekwondo in Ondo state, all our daughters will learn Taekwondo for our safety because if that students had the skill those randy soldiers couldn’t have been able to overcome her”, she said.

She noted that if the case of Soldiers rape in Army uniform is not swept under the carpet and the perpetrators are made to face the wrath of the law, it would serve as a deterrent to others.

Arabinrin Akeredolu who had earlier scheduled a One Million Woman Protest against rape in Army uniform for Thursday, explained that she decided to suspend it so that political detractors will not capitalise on it to cause mayhem.

Responding, the Commissioner of Police assured her that the issue would be given the desired seriousness, noting that the Police have not been taken rape cases with levity.

He assured that as soon as the Army Brigadier transfers the suspects to his Command, they would be charged to court without delay.
