Expert raises the alarm over health hazard of candles, air fresheners
As the world marks this year’s Environment Day, an environmentalist, Egbemuyiwa Olatunji, has raised the alarm that photocopiers, candles, air fresheners and insecticides are “killer agents.”
Olatunji who spoke on Wednesday in Abeokuta while delivering a lecture titled “Indoor Air Pollution” at an event organised by Ogun State Ministry of Environment to mark 2019 World Environment Day, attributed photocopier and other household appliances as sources of indoor pollution.
The expert said their users were prone to killer diseases such as cancer, asthma, lungs and heart diseases.
According to him, the killer-agents contained substances harmful to human respiratory system and thereby leading to death of many people.
Olatunji further said 72 per cent of Nigerians were exposed to air pollution in the home due to cooking with solid fuels.
Speaking on the impacts of air pollution on Nigerians, the expert said air pollution collectively reduced life expectancy by one year and eight months on average worldwide.
