George Weah's Free Education Policy, Challenge to the Government of Nigeria and Delta State

George Weah's free education policy, a challenge to the governments of Nigeria and Delta State.

A CALL BY NANS/JCC CHAIRMAN, DELTA STATE

The news of the declaration of tuition free policy for Liberia  University and other public schools in Liberia, both primary, secondary and tertiary by George Weah,  president of Liberia is one that has gladened my heart in no small way as it pptends hope for Africa in education development, recently many NGOs ranging from ASESI,  revive Africa Initiative have cried out on the alarming rate of out of school children in African with Nigeria having the highest out of school children.

This proactive action taken by Liberian President in a bid to encourage education is a step in the right direction that should be emulated by the federal government of Nigeria and Delta state government respectively.

Governments must be seen taking deliberate actions to promote education,  we have seen how the budget for education in the 2019 fiscal budget as presented by Delta state Government which is just 8% allocation for education falls far below the 26% recommended by UNESCO.

The NANS/JCC under my watch therefore calls on the Nigerian government to emulate such action while calling on the His Excellency Senator Dr. Ifeanyi Arthur Okowa, Governor of Delta state to immediately look into the current allocation for education in his budget by way of upward review through a virement or supplementary budget.

Conclusively I wish to also call on the Delta state Government to look in the Direction of making basic and secondary education free in Delta state bearing in mind that the newly swim in governor of Ekiti state recently signed an Executive order for free education in Ekiti state.
